Green Walls

Green walls are walls on buildings that are covered in plants. These plants can soak up rainwater, which helps stop too much water from going into drains and causing floods. Even if the water doesn’t stay in the wall, the plants help clean it by removing pollution.

What do green walls do?

  • Slow down rainwater during heavy storms
  • Look great and make places feel more natural
  • Help wildlife and insects by giving them places to live
  • Keep buildings cooler in summer and warmer in winter
  • Take in carbon dioxide, which helps fight climate change

Examples in Newcastle

Newcastle Helix has a 27-metre tall green wall with plants like ivy, thyme, and even bird boxes!

Marks & Spencer on Northumberland Street has a green wall that helps keep the building warm and attracts wildlife.
